Designed to Go Around the Mark, Not Over It
Unlike a typical sticker, the DermaMark label has a cutout at its centre, so the sticker sits around the mark, leaving it fully visible and unobstructed in the photo.
It is also made from a transparent film, meaning the skin surrounding the mark can also be seen clearly in every photo. This matters because changes in the area around a skin mark can sometimes be just as relevant as changes to the mark itself.
Of note,the transparent film gradually loses its clarity as it absorbs natural skin oils. For this reason, each DermaMark sticker is designed for single use, ensuring that every photo session starts with a fresh, fully transparent label.
A Grid That Works for Every Skin Tone
The most visible feature on a DermaMark sticker is the grid. There are actually two grids printed on the label: one in black and one in white. This is intentional.
Depending on your skin tone and the lighting conditions when you take your photo, one grid will naturally stand out more than the other. Lighter skin tones tend to contrast better with the black grid. Darker skin tones tend to contrast better with the white grid. By including both, DermaMark ensures there is always a visible reference point in your photo, regardless of who is using it.
The grid lines are spaced exactly 5mm apart with a 1mm ruler near the viewing window. This gives every photo a built-in scale reference, so the size of a skin mark can be visually compared from one photo to the next.
Consistent Coloring / The Colour Dots
You will also notice a set of small coloured cross-shaped markers on the sticker, in yellow, blue, magenta, and black. These are colour calibration references.
Cameras, phones, and lighting conditions all interpret colour slightly differently. A mark that looks brownish-red under warm indoor light may appear quite different under cool daylight. The colour markers on the DermaMark label help create a consistent colour baseline in every photo, making it easier to compare images taken at different times and in different conditions.
The Corner Symbols
The four symbols at each corner of the DermaMark label are known as fiducial markers. These are reference points specifically designed to be detected and measured in an image. Because their exact positions on the label are known, software can use them to calculate how the sticker was positioned relative to the camera at the moment the photo was taken. This is especially useful when a photo is taken on a curved part of the body, such as a shoulder or calf, where the label naturally bends with the skin. The fiducial markers allow an image to be mathematically flattened and corrected, so that the photo can be compared accurately to others taken at a different angle or on a different day. They are also readable by computer vision software, supporting more structured and automated image analysis.
A Place to Record Your Information
At the bottom of the label, you will find three simple fields: date, name, and body area.
It is best to fill these in before peeling the label from its film, while it is still flat and easy to write on. When you look back at a photo months later, you will know exactly when it was taken, whose skin it shows, and where on the body the mark is located. This makes your photo records easier to manage and easier to share with a health professional if you choose to do so.
Real Life Accuracy / A Shape Designed for Consistency

The curved cavity is meant to help you position the sticker in a consistent orientation each time you apply it.
